Old X2 websites archived

Dream17 reader Lemonhead sent us an email a week or so ago letting us know that he'd archived versions of the now defunct official website for PSone schoot 'em up X2. We've uploaded the sites for visitors to explore. There are unfortunately some instances of missing images or files, but the sites are effectively as they were back in 1995/96.

Worms: A Space Oddity fails to impress Veteran Wormers

Which is largely unsurprising really, considering it isn't aimed at us. It's aimed at people who haven't played a Worms game before. Team 17 had announced that the game would only have 17 weapons and yet knowing this Wormers are still going out to buy the game only to complain about the limited arsenal some minutes later. Unfortunately it's the Veterans who are the most vocal on the Team 17 forum. Go fig.

I personally haven't picked up the game, considering it came out just before I went back to England to visit family, but I imagine I'll pick it up fairly soon. It seems fairly pricey for a Wii game (compared to other games in the States, I mean). Once I have it I'll write a full, impartial review. Then I'll throw that in the bin and write a proper one.

Worms 3D Mac Universal Patch available

Mac Wormers pay attention!
The v1.1 Universal Patch for the Mac version of Worms 3D has been released three days ago. Now the owner's of a Mac with an Intel processor can play the game natively.

Get it either from Feral Interactive's support site or from Dream 17.

There's also a download for the normal v1.0.1 patch for Worms 3D (Mac) on the same page for, since it wasn't available from Dream17 before.
Yes, we take care for Mac users too. Finally.

IGN posts Worms retrospective, uses Dream17 content

A Worms Retrospective has been posted on IGN, and they've been rather cheeky and used one of our Total Wormage screenshots without asking us or crediting us. Which is nice.

Look familiar?
The article also has occasional bits of misinformation, such as the claim that the franchise has been going for "over twenty years" and then go on to say Andy designed the version version of the game in 1990, which is less than twenty years ago. They also claim that Worms 3D came out in 1999, a good couple of years before the GameCube and PS2 even hit the market. Have a read of the article yourself and see if you can spot any more inaccuracies.

Worms: A Space Oddity release soon

Worms: A Space Oddity is apparently due for release very soon. The Nintendo US website has the game listed for a March 11th release, while Amazon US lists it as March 17th. This appears consistent with the US release of Worms Open Warfare 2, which Amazon US had listed as coming out a week after its retail release elsewhere.

Interestingly, Amazon UK lists the game as having a March 28th release, which if accurate means this is the second Team 17 game to see a release outside of the UK first. The previous title was Lemmings PS3.

WOW2 on the PlayStation3 Store...?

Kotaku recently posted what may be a leaked screenshot of the new PlayStation Store for the PS3, and if you have a look you can see the Worms Open Warfare 2 logo on the left, between the Pixar and Patapon logos. Now as Kotaku themselves state, this screenshot may well be a mock-up - be it Sony in-house or just a hoax - but if Worms Open Warfare 2 did make it to the online store, it would likely remain a PSP exclusive. You wouldn't be able to play it on your PS3.

Sorry, PS3 Worms fans - you'll have to wait for now.

Worms XBLA wins an award which isn't an award

Calling it the Xbox Live Arcade Awards is at least 30% inaccurate. Three of the "awards" - "Best-Selling Game," "Most-Played Game" and "Highest-Rated Game" - aren't awards at all. No special consideration needs to be made to give those particular awards to anyone. All you need to do is look at the numbers and the person with the highest one wins that £5 WH Smith Gift Certificate.

Still, developing the most-played Xbox Live Arcade game of 2007 is definitely something to get excited about. Worms for Xbox Live was that game, which is fantastic. It's still one of the most-played Xbox Live games overall, I believe (the last time I checked it was in sixth place) proving that the 2D side of the franchise still has some sticking power despite Team 17's reluctance to release any further content or fix any of the glaring bugs that the game has. Well done, Team 17.

WormsDC in WinUAE: Yep, it definitely works

Worms: The Directors Cut most certainly works in the latest build of WinUAE, which is fantastic news. There is one minor graphical glitch (active sprites, such as the current worm in play, sheep, dynamite, etc., can sometimes be copied and overlaid the current sprite by one pixel to the right) but it doesn't affect the gameplay.

Terrific stuff - a slice of Worming history is now fully playable once again!
